Sustainability
Sustainability is the capacity to wisely manage and replenish resources to ensure enduring communities that thrive and prosper.
Traditional building is the original "green" approach, partly because the materials of construction have typically been renewable. Sustainable practices that best take advantage of the sun, wind, the seasons and appropriate materials were suggested by early Roman architect Vitruvius, as were interior environments with natural light, ventiliation and radiant heat. These practices have been developed and perfected over centuries.
More recently recognized pressing issues such as the global effects of energy have also resulted in the continuing development of specific newer technologies. Most are combatible with the design of traditional architecture.
We can help clients meet LEED standards or other specifically defined green building goals for their projects through knowledge and application of traditional and emerging practices as they relate to genuinely sustainable design.
Finally, it can be said that well-designed and built structures have a greater chance of eventually becoming recognized as historic landmarks. Their preservation and continued use saves energy and other resources that would have been spent on new construction.
